I have not forgot. Both of my sisters played in Clintwood's band in the '80s and I remember it well. They had alot of members and won alot of competitions.

Yeah, I watched band in early to mid 80's they were great. Had a great director, (Priode) may have been his name.
Oh how they could play (Loyal and true) after each touchdown. A good band makes for a wonderful atmosphere at football game, especially for fans!! [img]/LDPforum/ubbthreads/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif[/img]

Appy has a great band. Kelly's band, although small, has a great sound. St. Pauls tiny little band is, musically, very good. Lee High's band is one of the best around. PV and Norton are good as well, but others are just as good.
Waaay back in 1984 The Mean Green Marching Machine fielded 120 members, including the auxillaries. The numbers kept falling after that. I think the numbers went south when Luther Lewis left the elmentary band program.
Well, maybe they are. I am very old school, being a former member of Kelly's band under Lucian Priode, I get extremely aggravated at the lack of discipline that I now see. Our band isn't prepared by the first game, they have music on the field, and we're lucky if they play two songs. By the end of band camp, first week of August, we had our drill down for all four songs, and if you didn't have your music memorized before that, you did then, or an upperclassman was on your butt until you were playing in your sleep. There are a lot of things that I have seen that aggravate me, but I won't go into it. I just hear waayy too many sour notes, and players over blowing, and it sounds awful. Yes, I know numbers are awful, and that makes a lot of difference. But at one point Lucian had nine members, and look at what he turned it into. But then, you don't find as many geniuses as he was when it comes to music. Even hungover, the man could direct circles around most of the directors in the county, if not all. I don't even know if people realized that he designed our shows, the flags, and the uniforms that we worked so hard to pay for. He was also very much into school pride, the only colored flags that he allowed outside of Kelly red and white were rainbow colors. He liked rainbows. And when it came to the dance number, which was always the third number, a lot of times he asked the kids for input on what kind of steps to do, then he worked it out so that we didn't lose our formation. Does anyone still remember the band doing Sing, Sing, Sing, and at the end all the members made a flash? That was done with plastic champagne glasses, old square flashes, and tape. He was something else, and there will never be another like him.
I know a lot of schools in the area just don't have bands like they did at one time. I would like to commend Sheila King for the job she has done at RC. When she took over from Moorehouse in the mid 90s the band had turned terrible and numbers were low. After a ton of work, they band at RC is usually very good IMO.
Here's a BIG AMEN from another JJK Band alumni member! Many a day we were there from directly after school until dark getting our show perfected! We practiced 4 days a week after school during marching band season... 5 if it wasn' perfect. If you didn't have the music memorized... you didn't march!
BOY... have times changed! Went to a pep rally the other day and saw a senior band member looking at his music folder while playing the national anthem! I could NOT believe that he didn't have it memorized! Pitiful!
You are certainly right about that. There was a HUGE difference between seeing and hearing them the time before and the last time we visited Clinchport.

I must agree with you on the talent of Mr. Priode. Also, yes I do remember the show with the flashes. He was, indeed, a genius.
